ABOUT CERTIFICATION
Our certification program ensures horse well-being through an impartial evaluation of essential farrier skills. Those passing demonstrate the ability to provide a healthy standard of hoof care and possess comprehensive knowledge in anatomy, balanced trimming and shoeing, and corrective procedures.
CERTIFICATION LEVELS
Horse Owner Trim
This certification shows completion by a horse owner in a U.S. Farrier Association hands-on clinic.
Certified Farrier
This certification shows a basic level of proficiency by the farrier in trimming and shoeing. Prerequisites include graduation from a horseshoeing school and/or 1 year apprenticeship under a CJF. Farrier must pass a written exam and complete a passing shoeing and trim on a live horse in a time limited environment overseen by a U.S. F.A. evaluator.
Certified Journeyman Farrier
This certification shows a high level of proficiency by the farrier in trimming and shoeing. Prerequisites include graduation from a horseshoeing school and/or 1 year apprenticeship under a CJF, 3 years of experience as a farrier, and references. Farrier must pass a written exam, shoe board, and complete a passing shoeing and trim on a live horse in a time limited environment overseen by a U.S. F.A. evaluator. This certification allows the bearer to teach U.S.F.A. horse owner Clinics.
Master Farrier Educator
This certification shows the highest level of proficiency by the farrier in trimming and shoeing with emphasis on continuing education. Prerequisites include graduation from a horseshoeing school and/or 1 year apprenticeship under a CJF, 10 years’ experience as a farrier, and references. Farrier must pass a written exam, shoe board, and complete a passing shoeing and trim on a live horse in a time limited environment overseen by a U.S. F.A. evaluator. This certification allows the bearer to conduct U.S.F.A. evaluations and teach clinics.
